History

Cialis is a drug that is taken orally and is used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. This drug, like Viagra, was initially developed with the intention of treating heart problems but was later found to be helpful in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

This drug was developed by ICOS, a biotechnology company and was then marketed all over the world through a joint venture between Eli Lilly and Co. and ICOS that was collectively referred to as Lilly ICOS LLC.

The generic compound was first patented in the year 1994, with clinical trials beginning in the year 1995. It received approvals from the Food and Drug Administration in the year 2003 and the world began receiving the third approved medication for erectile dysfunction.

 

Brand Name and Generic Name

The brand name for the drug manufactured by the parent company is Cialis. The generic compound of this drug is called Tadalafil that was earlier known by the term IC351 during the clinical trial stages.

 

Indications for Use

This drug has been mainly introduced for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. It has also been in clinical trial stage for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension where it has been showing promising results.

 

Dosage for Use

The drug is available for use only with a prescription from a doctor. The available strengths of this drug are 5mg, 10mg and 20mg.

 
The starting dose for an individual is advised at 10mg prior to the sexual activity. This is later adjusted to 20mg or reduced to 5mg depending on the efficiency of the drug and the individual’s tolerance. But, this drug too is not recommended to be taken more than once in the period of a day.

 
In comparison to Viagra (Sildenafil citrate), the half life of the drug is quite good. This is the reason the action of the drug lasts up to 36 hours. For this reason, many refer to this drug in a light tone as the “Weekend Pill”.
